China has responded positively to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent remarks on China-India relations, expressing optimism about the future of diplomatic engagements between the two nations. Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi emphasized that the relationship has made “positive strides” following the high-level meeting between President Xi Jinping and Prime Minister Modi in Kazan, Russia, in October 2024.
During a recent address, Wang Yi highlighted that India and China, as two major Asian powers, should focus on cooperation rather than conflict. He stressed the importance of mutual development, urging both sides to be partners in progress and prosperity. He also reiterated that while boundary issues remain a subject of discussion, they should not overshadow the broader strategic and economic relationship between the two countries.

Over the past year, both nations have made efforts to ease tensions along the Line of Actual Control (LAC), with continued discussions aimed at resolving lingering border disputes. The successful disengagement at key friction points in eastern Ladakh last year has contributed to restoring some level of trust. The two sides have also maintained diplomatic and military communication channels to prevent further escalations.
On the economic front, China remains one of India’s largest trading partners, with bilateral trade exceeding $135 billion in 2024. Despite geopolitical tensions, both nations recognize the importance of economic collaboration in key sectors such as technology, renewable energy, and manufacturing. In recent discussions, there have been renewed efforts to enhance trade ties, with talks on easing certain restrictions and boosting investments.
